Ekorosk
Ab Ekorosk Oy is a waste management company founded in 2.11.1990 as a joint-stock company owned by the cities Jakobstad, Kokkola and Nykarleby and the municipalities Alahärmä, Evijärvi, Kaustinen, Kortesjärvi, Kronoby, Larsmo, Oravais, Pedersöre and Veteli.
There are about 124.000 inhabitants in the Ekorosk region and all household waste is handled by the company. The company also handles most of the industrial waste produced in the region.
The start
In 1985 the local municipal cooperation board appointed a committee to investigate whether the municipalities could work together when taking care of waste treatment. After many thorough investigations a final proposal could be made to set up a company at the end of 1989. The committee that had prepared the proposal had obtained guidelines on the issue at hand from Sweden, Denmark and Germany. As a result, particular attention was paid to the need of source separation.
Later research by the board of directors showed that source separation into biological and energy fractions would be the most profitable alternative.
The collecting and separating of waste started on 1 June 1993.
